Scripture
Act 17:11Â TPT They found that the Jews of Berea were of more noble character and much more open minded than those of Thessalonica. They were hungry to learn and eagerly received the word. Every day they opened the scrolls of Scripture to search and examine them, to verify that what Paul taught them was true.Â
Observation
After coming to Macedonia and the Grecian peninsula, Paul and Silas encounter much trouble in every city they go to, but they also find those who are open to and receive the word of the Gospel. When they came to the city of Berea and began to share just as they had in other cities and show from the scriptures that Jesus was the Messiah who had to die and rise from the dead, many here also believed. But Luke points out that the men of Berea were somewhat different than other places for “they opened the scrolls of Scripture to search and examine them, to verify that what Paul taught them was true.â€Â We should not believe something just because it sounds good. Nor should we reject something because we never heard or encountered it before. This passage says that the Bereans were “of more noble character and more open minded.â€Â They searched the Scriptures for themselves to see if Paul’s message was in line with the Word of God. Jesus said, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me.†(John 5:39 ESV) After the resurrection Jesus again explained to the disciples all that the Scriptures spoke of him, “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.†(Luke 24:27 ESV) “Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.†(Luke 24:44-45 ESV) Search the Scripture for yourself!
