使徒の働 18:3-4 (新改訳JSS2017)　 自分も同業者であったので、その家に住んで一緒に仕事をした。彼らの職業は天幕作りであった。パウロは安息日ごとに会堂で論じ、ユダヤ人やギリシア人を説得しようとした。

アテネでパウロが傑作品のメッセージを語った後に、コリントに行きました。コリントはアテネと並ぶ経済的、影響的な都市でした。しかしコリントの町は大変遊楽的な、みだらな町として知られていました。パウロはここで伝導戦略を少し調整しました。まず、教師やラビとしてではなく、有益な市民として仕事をすることにしました。アキラとプリスキラという夫婦と共に天幕づくりを営みました（二人は後にパウロの伝導チームに加わりました）。他の町同様にユダヤ人会堂（シナゴグ）でまず語りましたが、多くのユダヤ人は彼のメッセージを拒絶しました。それでも、数名のユダヤ人も、ギリシャ人も救われてきました（7-8節参照）。さらにメッセージ内容の焦点も調整しました。前回アテネで語ったような知的哲学的なものではなく、キリストの十字架中心のメッセージだけを語ることにしました。後にパウロはコリントの教会への手紙の中でこう語りました。「兄弟たち。私があなたがたのところに行ったとき、私は、すぐれたことばや知恵を用いて神の奥義を宣べ伝えることはしませんでした。なぜなら私は、あなたがたの間で、イエス・キリスト、しかも十字架につけられたキリストのほかには、何も知るまいと決心していたからです」（１コリント2:1-2 JSS2017；2:1-5；1:18-25節も参照）。また説明しました、「しかし、私たちは十字架につけられたキリストを宣べ伝えます。ユダヤ人にとってはつまずき、異邦人にとっては愚かなことですが、ユダヤ人であってもギリシア人であっても、召された者たちにとっては、神の力、神の知恵であるキリストです。」（1コリント1:23-24 JSS2017）。コリントの教会は小さくわずかな人数で始まりましたが、その地方の最も有力な教会として成長していきました。私たちの核心的なメッセージは十字架に着けられ、よみがえられたキリストでなければなりません。これが総まとめです。

Observation

After Paul delivered his masterpiece of a message in Athens, he went on to Corinth.  Corinth was a city that rivaled Athens in commercial and political influence, but it was also a deeply decadent and immoral city.  Paul tweaks his approach here.  First, he comes not as a teacher/preacher but as a productive member of society. He joins Aquila and Priscilla (who eventually become a core part of Paul’s evangelistic teams) as tentmakers and works for a living. Just as elsewhere he begins by speaking in the synagogue to the Jews but again most reject him (although several do become believers, see v.7-8). Secondly, he changes his message somewhat from philosophical and intellectual words to the message of the cross of Christ. “When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” (1Cor 2:1-2 NIV84; cf. v.1-5; also 1:18-25)  Paul later explains “Christ crucified” is “a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24  but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1Cor 1:23-24 NIV84).  Although it begins small, the church of Corinth eventually grows into a very influential church in the region.  Our core message must be Jesus Christ, crucified and risen from the dead. This sums up everything.
