Scripture
Act 18:9-10 NLTÂ One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision and told him, “Don’t be afraid! Speak out! Don’t be silent! 10 For I am with you, and no one will attack and harm you, for many people in this city belong to Me.”
Observation
Paul has been through much. He was attacked and stoned in Lystra (see Acts 14:19). He was severely beaten and thrown in prison in Philippi. He has been ridiculed and threatened wherever he has gone. Even Paul probably had moments of fear for his life and for even more physical attacks against him. It would be easy to maybe think to not be so vocal or stand out so much. But the Lord appeared in a vision and told Paul personally, “Do not be afraid!â€Â Would he have said that if Paul was not struggling somewhat with fear? But the Lord encouraged Paul and told him that in this evil and immoral city of Corinth, “I have many people in this city.â€Â Later when he was again in prison (in Rome) he asked for prayer. “Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.â€Â This is what Jesus promised and said to us, “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.†(John 14:26-27 NIV84)
