Scripture

Act 20:7 NIV84 On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight.

Observation

Paul is on his way back to Antioch and Jerusalem, traveling through Greece, Macedonia and Asia Minor visiting the churches that have been established and are growing.  At each place he encourages, strengthens, and builds up the believers (disciples). From early on, the churches in each locality are gathering together especially on “the first day of the week (Sunday.)  Two of the things they always seem to do were, “break bread†(communion and sharing a meal) and share the word of God together (see Acts 2:42 teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, prayers).  We are strongly admonished to not forsake gathering together. “ And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approachingâ€. (Heb 10:24-25 NIV84)  Paul so wanted to encourage and build up the believers in Troas that he spoke all night long (and they stayed to listed and receive from Paul). There is nothing that can replace the gathering together.

How does this apply to you?
