Scripture

Act 21:37,39,40 NLT  As Paul was about to be taken inside, he said to the commander, “May I have a word with you?” “Do you know Greek?” the commander asked, surprised. 39 “No,” Paul replied, “I am a Jew and a citizen of Tarsus in Cilicia, which is an important city. Please, let me talk to these people.” 40 The commander agreed, so Paul stood on the stairs and motioned to the people to be quiet. Soon a deep silence enveloped the crowd, and he addressed them in their own language, Aramaic.

Observation

This is a turning point in Paul’s ministry in many ways.  He will now be a prisoner and have to suffer for the sake of Christ and the Gospel.  The crowd even shouted the same thing they did to Jesus, “Get rid of him.†(v.36; see John 19:15)  But Paul uses every available means and opportunity to share the Gospel. Paul was a Jew, raised in the city of Tarsus, a center of wealth and higher education. Paul also states elsewhere that he is a Roman citizen and he fluently speaks Greek, the common languages of the Roman empire.  Being also educated in Jerusalem, he speaks Aramaic, the language of the Jews and the region of Judea etc.  Paul wisely uses all the various backgrounds and learning, experiences to advance the message of the Gospel wherever he can.  He speaks Greek to the Roman centurion, and gives his background as a citizen of Tarsus, an important city in Cilicia. Then when addressing the Jews, he begins speaking in Aramaic. Paul’s MO was “When I am with those who are weak, I share their weakness, for I want to bring the weak to Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone, doing everything I can to save some. 23 I do everything to spread the Good News and share in its blessings.†(1Co 9:22  NLT) God has uniquely equipped and gifted each of us through the things we have experienced in life.  Just like Paul let’s ask for wisdom in how to use all that God has given us and formed us to be to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ wherever we have been placed.

How does this apply to you?
