Scripture
Act 22:17, 21 MSG “Well, it happened just as Ananias said. After I was back in Jerusalem and praying one day in the Temple, lost in the presence of God,… 21 “But he said, ‘Don’t argue. Go. I’m sending you on a long journey to outsider Gentiles.'”
Observation
Paul is recounting his story of how the Lord Jesus has led him and set him on a mission to bring the Good News to even the Gentiles. The Lord had spoken to Ananias in Damascus that God had chosen Saul of Tarsus (Paul) to be a witness and the Lord’s “personal representative to Gentiles and kings and Jews†(Acts 9:15 MSG) and that “I’m about to show him (Saul) what he’s in for—the hard suffering that goes with this job.†(Acts 9:16 MSG). Now here, Paul tells about when Jesus himself speaks directly to Paul and confirms this calling. Later on when Saul is at Antioch with Barnabas and teachers and prophets, the Holy Spirit specifically says, “Take Barnabas and Saul and commission them for the work I have called them to do.†(Acts 13:2). Paul knew what his calling and ministry was, that he was called to be a minister of the Gospel to the Gentiles. “I am a special messenger from Christ Jesus to you Gentiles. I bring you the Good News so that I might present you as an acceptable offering to God, made holy by the Holy Spirit.†(Rom 15:16 NLT; see also Rom 11:13; Gal 2:8; Eph 3:8; 2Tim 1:11).This was so “out of the box†for a Jew to share anything about God’s goodness and mercy to the Gentiles that when Paul says, the Lord told him, “Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles!”, it threw the Jewish crowd into a total frenzy. But Paul grabbed onto God’s word and held it firm even in the face of hardship and much trouble. What has God spoken to you? When you have a word from God, hang on to it no matter what!Â
How does this apply to you?
