Scripture
Act 23:6 MSG Paul, knowing some of the council was made up of Sadducees and others of Pharisees and how they hated each other, decided to exploit their antagonism: “Friends, I am a stalwart Pharisee from a long line of Pharisees. It’s because of my Pharisee convictions–the hope and resurrection of the dead–that I’ve been hauled into this court.”
Observation
Paul has been arrested on unfounded charges. The Roman commander, wanting to get the facts and the basis of the charges against him, bring him to the Sanhedrin to hear what it is all about. Paul, very well versed and trained in the Law and also knowing the antagonism between Sadducees and Pharisees, raises a key point of contention, the resurrection of the dead (The Sadducees reject the resurrection, spirits and angels as unreal and not substantive, while the Pharisees believe all of these, see v. 8.) Paul states that actually he is on trial because of the “hope of the resurrection†which he declares is what happened to Jesus Christ. Paul’s actions and defense is to bring confusion to those who are trying to unfairly and illegally charge and convict him. He does this very effectively by pitting the Sadducees and Pharisees against each other. The result is that the court is divided and the Roman commander is still unable to verify and grasp what it is all about. But Paul is once again witnessing to the resurrection of Jesus Christ which is the pivotal point of the Gospel. Paul again uses every opportunity to share and declare the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
