使徒の働き 24:5-6（新改訳JSS2017）　実は、この男はまるで疫病のような人間で、世界中のユダヤ人の間に騒ぎを起こしている者であり、ナザレ人の一派の首謀者であります。6この男は宮さえも汚そうとしましたので、私たちは彼を捕らえました。

コメント

パウロはローマ総督ぺりクスの前に立たせられた裁判を受けています。まず、ユダヤ人側からテルティロという名の弁護士が訴えます。彼は口上手に語りましたが、訴えはすべてユダヤ人が偽造した偽りです。まず、パウロはナザレ人（クリスチャン）の一派の首謀者（JCB-首領； 口語訳‐かしら）ではありません。エルサレムの教会などにいた使徒たちやアンテオキアの教会の長老たちなどのもとにいました。パウロの周りで起きた騒動はパウロ自身が起こしたものではなく、他の人たちがパウロを殺すため、福音の働きを妨げるために起こされたものです。また、エルサレムの神殿を汚したり、侵したりしませんでした。すべての訴点は作り事でした。しかし、これはイエスが前をもって警告したことです。「わたしのために人々があなたがたをののしり、迫害し、ありもしないことで悪口を浴びせるとき、あなたがたは幸いです。喜びなさい。大いに喜びなさい。天においてあなたがたの報いは大きいのですから。あなたがたより前にいた預言者たちを、人々は同じように迫害したのです」（マタイ5：11‐12 JSS2017）。だからと言って、無言でこれらのことを耐えなければならないわけではありません。パウロが私たちに良き模範（前例）を与えてくださいました。パウロは真理に立ち、ただ、真実を語り伝えました（10-21節参照）。私たちは自分を弁護するために真理を無視した、真実を曲げたりする必要はありません。真理は必ず最終的に偽りに勝ちます。といっても、必ずしも公正に裁かれるという保証はありません。また、偽りの訴えのゆえに苦しまない約束もありません。最終的にはパウロの裁判の結末は殉教でおわりました。しかし、福音の真理は勝ち残ります。

Act 24:5-6, 9 ESV For we have found this man a plague, one who stirs up riots among all the Jews throughout the world and is a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes. 6 He even tried to profane the temple, but we seized him. 9 The Jews also joined in the charge, affirming that all these things were so.

Observation

Paul is now brought before Felix, the Roman Governor.  The Jews have brought with them a lawyer and spokesperson to bring charges against Paul.  He is a smooth talker but only reiterates the false charges the Jewish leaders have trumped up against Paul of from the beginning.  First of all, Paul is not the ringleader of the Nazarenes, the apostles in Jerusalem and elders in Antioch etc. were the leaders of the churches.  He never stirred up riots anywhere; others did to try to kill Paul or disrupt his proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And he did nothing to profane or desecrate the Temple in Jerusalem.  Every accusation was completely false.  Yet, this is exactly what Jesus said would happen.  “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Mat 5:11-12 ESV) This does not mean that we are to just suffer in silence.  Paul gives us an excellent example of how to stand against the false accusations of those who try to malign us and stop the message of the Good News by trying to make it something bad.  Paul stood for truth and only spoke the truth, whether it was about his actions, or about the Gospel of Jesus Christ(see v.10-21).  We do not need to make false claims or distort the facts.  The truth can always stand on its own and ultimately the truth will win over lies.  This does not mean however, that we will always have a fair trial or that we will never suffer because of false accusations; ultimately Paul is martyred (unjustly) for his faith.
