Scripture
Act 26:6-8 ESVÂ And now I stand here on trial because of my hope in the promise made by God to our fathers, 7 to which our twelve tribes hope to attain, as they earnestly worship night and day. And for this hope I am accused by Jews, O king! 8 Why is it thought incredible by any of you that God raises the dead?
Observation
Paul is giving his defense before King Agrippa (This is the son of Herod Agrippa (see Acts 12), and the great-nephew of Herod the Great (see Matt 2).) Although the Jews have accused him of many things, Paul says, it all boils down to one central point, the resurrection of Jesus. The hope of the resurrection is one of the key tenants of the Jewish faith, and Paul says this is the hope he has always had and now continues to live by. The resurrection of Jesus is the fulfillment of this hope of Israel. Then he challenges King Agrippa and those listening to consider this, “Why is it thought incredible by any of you that God raises the dead?† In writing to the church at Corinth, Paul says, “But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead.†(1Cor 15:13-14, 20-21 ESV) This is our greatest and most basic hope in Jesus Christ. The Apostle Peter declares, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.†(1Pet 1:3 ESV)
