Scripture

Heb 3:7-9 MSG  That’s why the Holy Spirit says, Today, please listen; 8 don’t turn a deaf ear as in “the bitter uprising,” that time of wilderness testing! 9 Even though they watched me at work for forty years, your ancestors refused to let me do it my way; over and over they tried my patience.

Observation

This is a warning and an encouragement.  It is a quote from Psalm 95:7-11. The Lord led his people as a shepherd leads his flock. If they would only listen to his voice and follow what he told them, they would be cared for and led into their promised land of rest.  But Israel in the wilderness, refused to listen or to trust the Lord and follow him.  Every time there was a problem or challenge, they questioned God and murmured and complained.  They hardened their hearts and turned away from the Lord their Shepherd.  They watched the Lord their Shepherd lead them and provide everyday for 40 years and still refused to believe God would work a miracle for them this time.  Proverbs encourages us to, “Trust GOD from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. 6 Listen for GOD’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track.†(Pro 3:5-6 MSG; see also Psa 37:3-7) The Lord is our Shepherd but we must hear his voice and follow him, trust in the Lord with all our heart.
