Scripture
Heb 3:12-13 ESV Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
Observation
We are given a warning here: Take heed, take care, see to it, beware, be careful, search your heart every day. Proverbs tells us, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.†(Pro 4:23 NLT)   What are we to be on the look out for? Unbelief. An unbelieving heart will trip us up and keep us from receiving and entering what God has for us. But it is more than just missing out on something. The Bible calls an unbelieving heart, an evil heart, because it turns us away from the Living God. Jeremiah warns and speaks much about this “evil heartâ€. “For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.†(Jer 3:13 ESV) “But they did not obey or incline their ear, but walked in their own counsels and the stubbornness of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward.†(Jer 7:24 ESV) Jeremiah also said, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? 10 “I the LORD search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.” (Jer 17:9-10 ESV). When we start listening to anything other than what God says, our hearts become “hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.†The answer is to turn back to God and his Word and put our whole trust in him. This is called Faith. “But my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.†(Heb 10:38-39 ESV) “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” Jer 17:7-8)  Â
