ヘブル4:1-3 （リビングバイブルJCB）　とはいえ、神の安息に入れるという約束は今も有効なのですから、あなたがたの中で万が一にも入りそこなう者が出ないように、心しようではありませんか。 2モーセの時代の人たちと同様、私たちにも、救いをもたらす福音が伝えられているからです。ところが、モーセの時代の人たちには、そのことばは何の役にも立ちませんでした。彼らは聞いても信じなかったからです。 3安息に入れるのは、神を信じる私たちだけです。

神がご自分の民、イスラエルを約束の地、安息の地に導き入れ、与えてくださるという約束と、創造主が創造のわざを終えて、休まれたこと（安息に入られたこと）をだぶらせています。「神は創造の七日目に、計画どおりにすべてをなし終えて休まれた」（4節JCB）。神の民にもこの同じ安息に預かり、味わうことを体験させてあげると約束されました。しかし、イスラエルはその約束された安息を受け取ることができませんでした。神のことばを信じなかったからです（信仰と結びつけなかったからです）。パウロも同じようなことを警告しました。「先祖たちの身に起こったこれらのことは、同じことをくり返してはならないという私たちへの警告です。それが記録されたのは、世の終わりが近づいている今、私たちがそれを読んで教訓を学ぶためです。 12ですから、よく注意しなさい。「私は、そんなことは絶対にしないから大丈夫」などと思っている人がいれば、そういう人こそ注意しなければなりません。同じ罪を犯すかもしれないからです」（1コリント10:11-12 JCB）。いわゆる、神が約束されているのに、私たちは信じなければ（神のことばに私たちの信仰を働かせなければ）、預かることができないということです。恐ろしいことです。「キリストは、もうすでにそこにお入りになりました。神が創造の働きを終えて休まれたように、キリストも任務を果たして、安息の中におられるのです。 11ですから私たちも、この安息の地に入れるように最善を尽くしましょう。イスラエルの人たちが神に不従順であったために入りそこねたことを、肝に銘じようではありませんか」（10-11節 JCB）。信仰を働かせる（神のことばを信じる）ことによってその約束と神の安息に入らなければならないというチャレンジです。

Heb 4:1-2 NIV84  Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. 2  For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.

Observation

God’s promise to bring his people into the promised land and give them rest from traveling and fighting, is overlapped with God himself entering into rest after the work of creation.  “And on the seventh day God rested from all his works.”  God wanted to let his people also experience the same rest and blessing.  But the writer of Hebrews says they did not enter the rest that God had planned for them, because they did not “combine it with faith,” responding in faith to God’s promise and invitation.  Paul also writes, “These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!” (1Co 10:11-12 NIV84)   We are warned in this passage of Hebrews “let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.” In other words, if we do not respond to and exercise our faith toward the promises of what God has prepared for us, we will not receive them either, we will not enter into the rest that God has planned and prepared for us.  That is a scary thought.  “For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall.” (v.10-11 NLT) The challenge is to exercise our faith (believe God and his promises) to receive them and enter into His rest.
