Scripture
Heb 10:35-36 NIV84Â So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. 36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.
Observation
Faith includes and works with confidence, patience, and obedience. As we will see in the definition of faith in the next chapter (just a few verses later), “Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen.†(11:1 NLT) But faith also requires patience. God does not always work on our time schedule. Some things that he has promised have taken thousands of years to come to fulfillment. E (ven in the case of Abraham, it took 25 years for him to see the fulfillment of the promise of God. Other times it has even been succeeding generations that saw the fulfillment. Patience is what lays hold of the promise and does not let go (does not throw away our confidence.) The other part of the working of faith is that it works in tandem with obedience, “when you have done the will of God.â€Â The writer of Hebrews goes on to quote the only OT passage that uses the word “faith†(see Hab 2:4), and says, “And My righteous ones will live by faith. But I will take no pleasure in anyone who turns away.” 39 But we are not like those who turn away from God to their own destruction. We are the faithful ones, whose souls will be saved.â€Â MSG says, “So don’t throw it all away now. You were sure of yourselves then. It’s still a sure thing! 39 But we’re not quitters who lose out. Oh, no! We’ll stay with it and survive, trusting all the way.â€Â
How does this apply to you?
