Scripture
Heb 11:24-28 NLTÂ It was by faith that Moses, when he grew up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. 25 He chose to share the oppression of God’s people instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He thought it was better to suffer for the sake of Christ than to own the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to his great reward. 27 It was by faith that Moses left the land of Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger. He kept right on going because he kept his eyes on the one who is invisible. 28 It was by faith that Moses commanded the people of Israel to keep the Passover and to sprinkle blood on the doorposts so that the angel of death would not kill their firstborn sons.
Observation
Moses is indeed an enormous figure of faith in the OT. But everything he did and chose was not always because of his glowing, unwavering stance of faith. When we read the account in the book of Exodus, we see he had very real struggles and did not always make the right decisions. However, when God records it, he picks up the shining points of faith that undergird and carried him through. We see the same for Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and then also with the children of Israel (the two points God records Israel’s faith are the crossing of the Red Sea and the miracle of Jericho. But there were also 40 years of unbelief and many wrong responses.) The reality is there were times when they did not always walk completely in faith. They made some wrong judgments and decisions, but God only see, remembers, and records the times when they responded “By faith…†here in this chapter. Here is Paul’s testimony, “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.†(1Tim 1:15-16 NIV84) “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.†(1Cor 15:10 NIV84) God sees the points at which we believe and respond in faith. Let’s make them many and more often.Â
