Scripture

Pro 6:23-25 NLT  For their command is a lamp and their instruction a light; their corrective discipline is the way to life. 24 It will keep you from the immoral woman, from the smooth tongue of a promiscuous woman. 25 Don’t lust for her beauty. Don’t let her coy glances seduce you.

Observation

Proverbs give us many bits of wisdom across the spectrum of life. They are the key to a successful, fulfilled, and blessed life (see Pro 4:4, 13 etc.) One of the themes repeated over and over again is to stay away from and don’t get caught by “the promiscuous, wayward woman (of course, this warning must go the other way for the seductive man). Marriage and sexual fulfillment in its bounds are ordained and blessed by God (Gen 1:27-28; 2:24; Heb 13:4 etc.) Any sexual deviation outside of this boundary is destructive and strongly warned against throughout God’s Word. There are two types of promiscuous women who are warned against here, the prostitute and the adulteress wife (v.26). Solomon warns his son how foolish it would be to get caught by these seducers (same whether women or men.)  Take time to read the warnings and results of not following this very important bit of wisdom (v.26-35). But the NT gives us even more dire consequences and judgment against those who would walk this path: eternal judgment in the Lake of Fire (see Rev. 21:8; 22:15 etc.) Paul strongly warns us also. “Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, 10  or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God.†(1Cor 6:9-10 NLT)  But what if you have been caught in this trap and defiled by sexual sins?  Paul goes on to say in the very next verse, “Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.†(1Cor 6:11 NLT; see also Col 3:5-7; Titus 3:3-6)
