Scripture

Pro 17:14 NLT Starting a quarrel is like opening a floodgate, so stop before a dispute breaks out.

(NIV84) Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.

Observation

So easy to start quarrelling or arguing, but as soon as one does, it usually opens a floodgate or breaches a dam.  There is always one more thing that seems to be needed to say and then it goes on and on.  Usually even if you win an argument (or feel like you did,) it does not change the other persons mind and only increases bad feelings. Here are a few more proverbs along the same line:

Pro 17:19 NLT  Anyone who loves to quarrel loves sin; anyone who trusts in high walls invites disaster.

Pro 26:21 NLT A quarrelsome person starts fights as easily as hot embers light charcoal or fire lights wood.

Pro 29:22 NLT An angry person starts fights; a hot-tempered person commits all kinds of sin.

James suggests: “Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.†(Jam 1:9 NLT)

Paul advises Timothy: “Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. 24  A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. (2Tim 2:23-24 NLT)

Don’t breach the dam!
