Scripture

Mark 8:27-29 NIV84 Jesus and His disciples left Galilee and went up to the villages near Caesarea Philippi. As they were walking along, He asked them, “Who do people say I am?” 28 “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say You are one of the other prophets.” 29 Then He asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Messiah.”

Observation

The important question is not “Who do people say I (Jesus) am?† It is, “Who you say I am? It is necessary to understand what people think about Jesus too, but to testify of Jesus, we must be certain of who we see Jesus to be?  What people think and even what we think about who Jesus is, does not change the truth of who he really is.  Jesus was not trying to find or understand his identity but rather to help the disciples and us to know who he truly was.  In the parallel passage in Matthew Peter replied, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” (Matt 16:16 NIV84).  He is not just a good teacher.  He is not just a powerful prophet.  He is not another messenger who God has sent to man.  He is the Messiah, the Christ, whom God promised in the OT would come. But even more important He is the Son of the Living God, God himself incarnate (God become man).  He declared himself, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through Me. If you had really known Me, you would know who My Father is. From now on, you do know Him and have seen Him!  …Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father! So why are you asking Me to show Him to you? ”  (John 14:6-7,9 NIV84)

How does this apply to you?
