さて、彼らはゲツセマネという場所に来た。イエスは弟子たちに言われた。「わたしが祈っている間、ここに座っていなさい。」　34彼らに言われた。「わたしは悲しみのあまり死ぬほどです。ここにいて、目を覚ましていなさい。」

イエスは弟子たちにお願いしました。「わたしが祈っている間、ここに座っていなさい．．．ここにいて、目を覚ましていなさい」。イエスは生涯最大の危機に直面していました。しかし、このため地上に来られたことをよく認識していました。「私の魂は非常に悲しんでいて〈苦悩に押しつぶされていて〉死ぬばかりである。ここにとどまっていて、目を覚まして〈見張りして〉いなさい」（34節、詳訳聖書）。イエスはこの使命を全うするためには父なる神のところに行き、心を注ぎだして祈ることが不可欠であることを知っていました。弟子たちも祈りなくしてはこの時を乗り越えることができないことも知っていました。ゆえに、彼らに言いつけました。「ここにいて、目を覚ましていなさい．．．誘惑に陥らないように、目を覚まして祈っていなさい。霊は燃えていても肉は弱いのです」（34，38節）。実は以前にもこのことを彼らに警告したのです。「あなたがたは、必ず起こるこれらすべてのことから逃れて、人の子の前に立つことができるように、いつも目を覚まして祈っていなさい」（ルカ21:36 JSS2017）。ペテロも他の弟子たちもこの時、見事に失敗しました。しかし、残りの人生と使命のために、貴重な教訓を学びました。ペテロの生涯の終わりころに私たちにもチャレンジしました。「万物の終わりが近づきました。ですから、祈りのために、心を整え身を慎みなさい。．．．目を覚ましていなさい。あなたがたの敵である悪魔が、吼えたける獅子のように、だれかを食い尽くそうと探し回っています」（1ペテロ4:7; 5:8 JSS2017）。だから、私たちに促しています。「あなたがたの思い煩いを、いっさい神にゆだねなさい。神があなたがたのことを心配してくださるからです」（1ペテロ 5:7 JSS2017）。パウロもこのように言っています。「何も思い煩わないで、あらゆる場合に、感謝をもってささげる祈りと願いによって、あなたがたの願い事を神に知っていただきなさい。そうすれば、すべての理解を超えた神の平安が、あなたがたの心と思いをキリスト・イエスにあって守ってくれます」（ピリピ 4:6-7 JSS2017）。

Mar 14:32,34 NLT  They went to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and Jesus said, “Sit here while I go and pray.” 34 He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with Me.”

Observation

Jesus appealed to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray…Stay here and keep watch with me.”  Jesus was facing the most difficult challenge of his life, even though he knew that this was the primary reason for his life here on earth.  “My soul is exceedingly sad (overwhelmed with grief) so that it almost kills Me! Remain here and keep awake and be watching.” (AMP)  Jesus knew the only way to be able to successfully complete his mission was to get to the Father and pour out his heart in prayer.  He also knew that it would be the key for the disciples to overcome in this crucial hour.  So he challenges them to “Keep watch with me…  Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”(v. 38 NIV84).  He had actually told them this repeatedly before, “Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21:36) Peter and the other disciples failed miserable on this occasion but learned a valuable lesson for the rest of their lives and mission.  Toward the end of his life Peter challenges us, “The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray… Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1Pet 4:7; 5:8 NIV84).  That is why he says, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1Pet 5:7 NIV84) Paul says it this way, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Phil 4:6-7 NIV84)
