マルコ　14:72（新改訳JSS2017）　するとすぐに、鶏がもう一度鳴いた。ペテロは、「鶏が二度鳴く前に、あなたは三度わたしを知らないと言います」と、イエスが自分に話されたことを思い出した。そして彼は泣き崩れた。

これは聖書の中で最も心苦しい話です。ペテロだけではなく、私たちにとっても。ペテロはどうして、あからさまに真っ赤な嘘を言って、イエスを知らないと否定することができたのでしょうか？イエスとほかの弟子と共にいたときに、あれまでに絶対イエスを見捨てない、拒まないと言ったのに（14:27-31参照）。しかし、いま、イエスは逮捕され、十字架刑の判決を受け、周りには敵対する者ばかりに囲まれて、一人の女中の女に顔付けられ、指さされて、「あなたも、ナザレ人イエスと一緒にいましたね。」と言われたときに、パニックして、三度も「知らん！そんな男のことなど知らない。」と自分に呪いまでかけて誓った。ルカの福音書では「主は振り向いてペテロを見つめられた。ペテロは、「今日、鶏が鳴く前に、あなたは三度わたしを知らないと言います」と言われた主のことばを思い出した」（ルカ22:61 JSS2017）とあります。これはペテロにとって、主イエスとの歩みの中で最もどん底の時でした。でも、イエスはこれをも用いて、ペテロの内に強く立つだけではなく、他の人たちをも強めることのできる人に造り変えました。復活の後にペテロを悔い改めに導き、回復させました（ヨハネ21:15-19参照）。ペテロはそれからイエスが言われた通りに、教会を建て上げる最も重要な器としました。「そこで、わたしもあなたに言います。あなたはペテロです。わたしはこの岩の上に、わたしの教会を建てます。よみの門もそれに打ち勝つことはできません」（マタイ16:18 JSS2017）。私たちがどんなことをしても、どうなったとしても、主は私たちをあきらめません。パウロは言いました。「あなたがたのうちに良い働きを始められた神は、必ずそれを恵みのうちに成長させ、やがてキリスト・イエスが帰って来られる日までに、それを完成してくださると、私は堅く信じています」（ピリピ 1:6 JCB; ユダ1:24-25も参照）。

Mar 14:72 NLT  And immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know Me.” And he broke down and wept.

Observation

This is one of the most painful stories in the Bible!  Not only for Peter but for all of us.  How could Peter so blatantly and totally deny that he even knew Jesus?  When he was with Jesus and the other disciples, he was so emphatic that he would never forsake or deny Jesus (see 14:27-31).  And yet now with Jesus on trial and being condemned to death, and hostile people all around him, a little loud-mouthed servant girl gets right in his face, points a finger at him and says, “You were one of those with Jesus of Nazareth.” Peter freaks out and denies it 3 times and even swears, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”  Luke tells us, “At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Suddenly, the Lord’s words flashed through Peter’s mind.” (Luke 22:61 NLT)  This was obviously the lowest point in Peter’s walk with the Lord Jesus, and yet Jesus uses it to build character and faith into Peter.  Then he walks him through forgiveness and restoration after the resurrection (John 21:15-19) Peter goes on to become one of the key leaders and builders of the church of Jesus Christ.  Jesus had told him earlier “Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build My church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.” (Matt 16:18 NLT) God is never through with us no matter what happens and what we do, he always continues to work in us. “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” (Phil 1:6 NLT; see also Jud 1:24-25).
