Scripture
Joel 2:13-14 NIV84 Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. 14 Who knows? He may turn and have pity and leave behind a blessing— grain offerings and drink offerings for the LORD your God.
(MSG) Change your life, not just your clothes. Come back to GOD, your God. And here’s why: God is kind and merciful. He takes a deep breath, puts up with a lot, This most patient God, extravagant in love, always ready to cancel catastrophe. 14Â Who knows? Maybe he’ll do it now, maybe he’ll turn around and show pity. Maybe, when all’s said and done, there’ll be blessings full and robust for your GOD!
Observation
Joel is warning of impending calamitous disaster and judgement of God falling on the people who have turned away from him and are living in open rebellion and sin against God. And yet, the Lord calls out to his people to repent, return to him because “He is a gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.†(NIV84) “God is kind and merciful. This most patient God, extravagant in love, always ready to cancel catastrophe.â€(MSG; see also Psa. 103:8-12) What he most deeply desires is not judgement and disaster but to show mercy and compassion to those who would turn and return to the Lord. “Maybe, when all’s said and done, there’ll be blessings full and robust for your God!†(v. 14 MSG) He longs to bless us for his sake.Â
