Scripture

Joel 2:25  I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent among you.

Observation

The book of Joel starts out with God sending a horde of locust that totally devastate the land (see 1:4-7; 2:2-11). It is part of what God warned would happen if they turned from him and did not obey him (see Deut 28:38). God’s purposes in judgement and destruction was not to destroy but to bring his people back to their senses and return to the Lord.  When they do, he promises to restore them and to restore all that the devastation has stripped from them. God desires to bless and prosper his people, but only when they look to him and walk in his ways (see Deut 28:1-2).  The promise here is that even when he has allowed devastation and destruction (see 1:10-12), He is a God who restores what He has allowed the enemy to destroy. “You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God and there is none else. And my people shall never again be put to shame.†(Joel 2:27 ESV) This is where the promise of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit is also given.  “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh.†(2:28 ESV) The result is, “And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.†(2:32 ESV; see also Acts 2:16-21) God desires to restore and repay what the enemy has stolen.

How does this apply to you?
