Joel 3:10 ESV Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears; let the weak say, “I am a warrior.”

Observation

There are several passages which say that in the end, there will be no more war and “they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.” (Isa 2:4 NIV84). That time is coming.  But as long as there is evil in this world  there will be judgment against wickedness, and God will use nations to judge nations.  Ecclesiastes says, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven…a time for war and a time for peace.” (Ecc. 3:1,8 NIV84).  Especially in the spiritual realm we are called to be warriors. Paul tells us: “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.  Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” (Eph 6:10-11 NIV84; see also 1Pet 5:7-11).  So Joel says in the time of war to “beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears.”  And let the weak say, “I am a warrior” (MSG-“Let the weak one throw out his chest and say, “I’m tough. I’m a fighter.”)  Moses commanded Joshua, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deut 31:6 NIV84). Proverbs tells us, “The righteous are bold as a lion.” (Pro 28:1 NIV).  “In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.” (Heb 12:4 NIV84) When it is time to fight, fight with everything you have, but trusting God who has already given you the victory over the enemy because, “the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” (1John 4:4 NIV84)  And “in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Rom 8:37 NIV84).
