Scripture
1Ki 1:5Â (NIV84) Now Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said, “I will be king.” So he got chariots and horses ready, with fifty men to run ahead of him.
Observation
Adonijah was obviously a very gifted and able man. Otherwise, Joab and Abiathar would not have given him their support (see v. 7) But he tried to manipulate people and the situation to advantage himself. As we see later, he never learned his lesson and also tried to use manipulate others including Bathsheba and Solomon to get what he wanted (see 1Kings 2:13,19 etc.).  It ultimately led to his death. God has given each of us gifts and abilities to use to accomplish his will and purpose for our lives. “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.†(Rom 12:3 NIV84) Paul goes on to tell us. “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7 If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; 8 if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.†(Rom 12:6-8 NIV84; see also Acts 13:36)  Â
