Scripture
1Ki 1:13, 14, 24 NIV84 Â Go in to King David and say to him, ‘My lord the king, did you not swear to me your servant: “Surely Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne”? Why then has Adonijah become king?’ 14 While you are still there talking to the king, I will come in and confirm what you have said.” 24 Nathan said, “Have you, my lord the king, declared that Adonijah shall be king after you, and that he will sit on your throne?
Observation
David is old and not completely able to function in all of his kingly duties as king, and yet he is still the king. In the vacuum of leadership, David’s son, Adonijah has set himself up as king, even though David has expressed his desire for Solomon to be the next king. Adonijah is a usurper but if this situation is allowed to stand, Solomon, his mother Bathsheba, Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet will be in grave danger. Nathan the prophet takes decisive action to uphold the proper chain of command and authority. He sends Bethsheba to King David with the news of Adonijah’s usurpation and also comes in to confirm the story. But he allows David to exercise his authority and stands together in support of the true authority. Everything is on the line but they put their trust in the Lord and expect him to bring everything into proper order. This is very important. God has an ordained order (see Psa 2:6; 45:6; 89:27,36,37; 110:1-2; Isa 9:6-7 etc.). We are to honor and submit to God ordained authority (Rom 13:1; 1Tim 2:1-2; Tit 3:1; 1Pet 2:13-17 etc.). There are situations where there is an illegitimate authority. We must submit ourselves to God divine order and work his established authority. We will see how God deals with Adonijah and his usurpation.
We must always pray (see 1Tim 2:1-4)
