Scripture
1Ki 2:22 NIV84 King Solomon answered his mother, “Why do you request Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? You might as well request the kingdom for him—after all, he is my older brother—yes, for him and for Abiathar the priest and Joab son of Zeruiah!”
Observation
King Solomon had given Adonijah one chance to reform himself and to choose wisely (see 1Ki 1:52-53). But Adonijah tried to take advantage of his young brother who now was sitting on the Throne of his father David, by God’s design and purpose. Adonijah was still scheming to take the Kingdom for himself and even tried to use Solomon’s mother Bathsheba to accomplish his ends (see 2:13-17). Though Solomon was young God had given him great wisdom and insight. He saw through Adonijah’s request and his answer was “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if Adonijah does not pay with his life for this request!†(v.23) The lesson is be careful what you ask for and make sure it comes from a right heart and desire. “And He gave them their request, But sent leanness into their soul. (Psa 106:15 NKJV) “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? “I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.” (Jer 17:9-10 NIV84; see also Matt 6:33)
