Scripture

1Ki 2:36-37 NIV84  Then the king sent for Shimei and said to him, “Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and live there, but do not go anywhere else. 37 The day you leave and cross the Kidron Valley, you can be sure you will die; your blood will be on your own head.”

Observation

Do you remember Shimei?  He is the one who came out and cursed David as he was fleeing from Absolom.  When David returned after Absolom’s defeat and death, Shimei pleaded with David for grace and forgiveness. David extended grace to him and did not have him killed at that time.  But he tells Solomon not to forget what Shimei had done and to hold him accountable. (He did not trust him; forgiveness and trust are two separate issues. See 2Sam 16:5-9; 19:19)  Solomon gives Shimei a period of grace but with a condition, he is not to leave Jerusalem. Shimei is grateful and swears an oath to accepts this conditional pardon.  But when two of his slaves run off he goes out of Jerusalem to retrieve them.  He probably thought that he had a good excuse, but it violated his promise (see v. 38,42-43). It is very important to be faithful to our word (David said, even when it hurts Psa 15:4; Also Jesus said a simple “yes†must be kept Matt 5:33-37; see also James 5:12).  When Shimei violated his oath, Solomon knew he could not be trusted and held him accountable.  Both mercy and truth are the foundations of a righteous throne both God’s throne and here on earth (Psa 89:14; Pro 20:28).  It must also be the foundation of our lives (we are also kings and priests see 1Pet 2:5,9).

How does this apply to you?
