Scripture

1Ki 12:7 ESV And they said to him, “If you will be a servant to this people today and serve them, and speak good words to them when you answer them, then they will be your servants forever.”

Observation

Solomon life and reign has come to a close.  Although he had a very good start and had the best of everything given to him to succeed, his choices led him to a dismal end.  Now his son Rehoboam succeeds him and he is given some choices to make right at the beginning to determine the trajectory and direction of his reign.  He first goes for advice to the elders who have walked with Solomon his father.  Amazingly, they give him some very good and solid advice, “Serve the people and they will serve you.â€Â  But he was afraid that, he would lose control if he was too soft.  He went to some of the younger counselors with whom he had grown up and asked their advice.  They advised him to increase his control and keep and heavy hand in his leadership.  As we shall see it does not turn out well for him.  Jesus gave us the model and example of servant leadership.  “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matt 20:25-28 ESV)  Jesus who was the Master and King of the Universe chose to share his leadership with his disciples.  “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.â€Â  (John 15:13-15 ESV).
