Scripture
1Ki 12:22-24 NLTÂ But God said to Shemaiah, the man of God, 23Â “Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the people of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, 24Â ‘This is what the LORD says: Do not fight against your relatives, the Israelites. Go back home, for what has happened is My doing!'” So they obeyed the message of the LORD and went home, as the LORD had commanded.
Observation
There is much consternation and confusion as to what is happening. Ten tribes of Israel have rebelled against the House of David and split off. Rehoboam, son of Solomon decides to go to war and force them back under his rule. But God speaks to them through his prophet that, this situation “is My doing.â€Â Sometimes in the midst of less than perfect situation and confusion, we try to take things into our own hands. But it is vital that we always listen to the word of the Lord and obey it whether we understand it or not. Rehoboam listened to the Word of the Lord and saved his people from what could have been disastrous. On the other hand, Jeroboam and Israel trusted in their own wisdom rather than God’s and set up idols to pacify the people. Jeroboam used this reasoning, “It is too much trouble for you to worship in Jerusalem. Look, Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of Egypt!†This was the same golden calf that made God and Moses so angry at Mt. Sinai (see Ex. 32:4,8). This became a snare to the Northern Tribes of Israel. Do not let anything replace your obedience and worship of the One True God (See also Psa 4:2; 40:4).Â
How does this apply to you?
