Scripture

1Ki 13:2-3 NIV84  And the man cried against the altar by the word of the LORD and said, “O altar, altar, thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name, and he shall sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who make offerings on you, and human bones shall be burned on you.'” 3 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign that the LORD has spoken: ‘Behold, the altar shall be torn down, and the ashes that are on it shall be poured out.'”

Observation

An unnamed prophet of the Lord was instructed by the Lord to go to Bethel where Israel’s King Jeroboam had set up a golden calf and an altar.  While Jeroboam was making an offering, the prophet cried out this prophetic declaration that a King of Judah named Josiah would desecrate the altar.  He also gave a sign to authenticate the prophetic word.  The altar would split apart and the ashes of the altar would spill out onto the ground.  That is exactly what happened.  When Jeroboam tried to arrest the prophet, his arm froze in place until the prophet prayed for him and restored him.  This should have been enough to turn Jeroboam and Israel back to the Lord but they did not and this Golden Calf continued to cause Israel to sin for hundreds of more years.  Just as the prophetic word said a King of Judah named Josiah came and destroyed the idol and the altar and burnt their priests on it.  But that was 300 years later (see 2 King 23:1-20). When we hear or read the prophetic word of God, we expect that it should be fulfilled right away.  God is not bound to time.  But he is bound to his word,  and will always bring it to fulfillment.  “But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.†(2Pet 3:8-9 NIV84) And God still speaks through his prophets today.
