Scripture

1Ki 14:21-22 ESV  Now Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city that the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. His mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonite. 22 And Judah did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins that they committed, more than all that their fathers had done.

Observation

The leadership of a nation and of families, and any other level of leadership is very important.  It influences everyone under them. In a very few years (17 years) the glorious Kingdom of Israel under Solomon deteriorated to just a fraction of what it had been.  And the people degenerated also.   “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan.†(Pro 29:2; see also Pro 11:10; 28:12, 28)  That is why it is so important to pray for those in authority and who have been placed over us.   “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.†As important as it is to have godly, righteous leadership, it is even more important that we live godly and righteously (see Titus 2:12-13; 2Pet 2:9 etc.).

How does this apply to you?
