１列王記 16:34 （新改訳JSS2017）　彼の時代に、ベテル人ヒエルがエリコを再建した。彼は、その礎を据えたとき長子アビラムを失い、門を建てたとき末の子セグブを失った。ヌンの子ヨシュアを通して語られた主のことばのとおりであった。

コメント

これはこれまで最も暗い時代でありました。アハブ王についてこのように書いてあります、「彼以前のだれよりも主の目に悪であることを行った」（30節）。彼はバアル崇拝をイスラエルに紹介し、導き入れました。当時の最も忌むべき偶像でした。そればかりか、この時にヒエルという名の人が神のことばに逆らってエリコの町を再建しました。ヨシュアの預言のことばどおり、基礎を据えたときに長子が死に、門を建てたときに末の子が死にました（ヨシュア6:26参照）。主は必ずご自分のことばを見守ります（エレミヤ1:12参照）。しかし、このような暗闇の時に神は新しいことをしようとしています。次の節に神は預言者を送りました。主はいつもオンタイムの神です。

1Ki 16:34 NIV84 In Ahab’s time, Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho. He laid its foundations at the cost of his firstborn son Abiram, and he set up its gates at the cost of his youngest son Segub, in accordance with the word of the LORD spoken by Joshua son of Nun.

Observation

This is the darkest moment in Israel’s spiritual history up to this time.  Of Ahab it is recorded, “Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the LORD than any of those before him.” (v.30 NIV84).  He introduces and leads Israel in the worship of Baal, one of the most detestable idols of the time.  But also at the same time a man named Hiel dares to defy God and his word and rebuilds Jericho.  When the Lord lead Israel into the Promised Land of Caanan, the first city to be conquered and destroyed was Jericho. Joshua had pronounced a curse on anyone who would try to rebuild Jericho (see Josh. 6:26).  According to the word of God, as he rebuilds Jericho, his oldest son died when he laid the foundation of the city, and his youngest died when he set up its gates.  Even though Joshua had prophesied this hundreds of years before, it still held true.  God always watches over his word to fulfill it (see Jer 1:12). But at this very dark time, God is about to do a new thing,  a true prophet of God is about to come on the scene (in the very next verse.) God is always right on time.
