Scripture

1Kings 19:4-5 NLT Then he went on alone into the wilderness, traveling all day. He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,†he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors who have already died.†Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree. But as he was sleeping, an angel touched him and told him, “Get up and eat!â€

Observation

Elijah has just experienced one of the greatest miraculous demonstrations of the power of God and all of Israel proclaiming, “The Lord, He is God.  The Lord, He is God.â€Â  And yet when one woman swears to kill him by sundown, he runs for his life.  He has indeed had an exhausting day and now in spite of God’s miraculous power, Elijah is drained of energy both physically and emotionally.  He tells God that he has had a enough and just wants to die.  Two things helped to restore his strength, a good sleep and some food, even though we see that the food was also miraculously provided (Manna?). The angel told him, “Get up and eat some more, or the journey ahead will be too much for you.†(v.7). But this was heavenly food for we see, “the food gave him enough strength to travel forty days and forty nights to Mount Sinai, the mountain of God.â€Â  The sleep and food helped to restore his physical strength but there was one more thing Elijah needed to keep on going and finish the work that God had for him; that is the Word of the Lord.

How does this apply to you?
