Scripture

1Kings 19:11-13 ESV  And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12  And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. 13  And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?â€

Observation

Elijah is at the end of his rope.  He has run to the Lord but is discouraged and wallowing in self-pity.  But he has come to the right place.  This is where Moses had encountered God, and He had spoken to Moses and the the children of Israel.  There is a fierce windstorm that even broke rocks into pieces;  there was an earthquake and then a fire; but God did not reveal himself in those violent natural phenomenon.  Then God spoke to Elijah in a low whisper, and He asks him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?†Elijah once more pours out his discouragement and self-pity.  God ignores it but gives Elijah an assignment: anoint the successors of king of Aram (Syria), king of Israel, and his own prophetic successor, Elisha.  Actually, Elijah himself only fulfilled, the last of these, called Elisha to be his attendant (see v.19-21). The other two were actually fulfilled by Elisha according to the word of the Lord.   The Lord gave Elijah one more word of encouragement, “Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.†(v.21 ESV).  Even when we think we are all alone, the Lord has many others who also stand with us.
