Scripture
1Kings 20:3-4,5-6 ESV And he sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel and said to him, “Thus says Ben-hadad: 3 ‘Your silver and your gold are mine; your best wives and children also are mine.’â€Â 5 The messengers came again and said, “Thus says Ben-hadad: ‘I sent to you, saying, “Deliver to me your silver and your gold, your wives and your children.†6 Nevertheless I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they shall search your house and the houses of your servants and lay hands on whatever pleases you and take it away.’â€
Observation
The king of Aram (Syria) makes claim on King Ahab and all he has. Ahab foolishly tries to placate him by agreeing with Ben-hadad but when Ben-hadad threatens to come and take everything he lays claim to, Ahab has had enough and tries to stand up to the enemy. This story takes several more turns and twist but what we learn here is that the enemy only comes to steal, kill and destroy (see John 10:10). When we give in to the devil and try to placate him with compromise, he only come and tries to take more. We are told, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.†(1Jam 4:7 ESV). Peter tells us how we can do this, “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.†(1Pet 5:8-9 ESV) And don’t forget, “If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?†(Rom 8:31-32 ESV)
How does this apply to you?
