1列王記 21:27-29　（リビングバイブルJCB）　王はエリヤのことばを聞くと、上着を引き裂き、ぼろをまとい、断食をし、荒布の上に伏して、打ちひしがれていました。 28その時、エリヤはまた主から別のことばを聞きました。 29「アハブがわたしの前にへりくだっているのを見たか。あんなにまでしているので、王が生きている間、私の誓ったことは実行しないことにする。息子の代にそれらのことが起こって、彼の子孫はみな滅びる。」

コメント

だれであれ、何をしたにもかかわらず、悔い改めるときには神はあわれみと赦しをもって応答します。しかし、神は全き義なる方であり、正義の神です。聖書はアハブをこのように評価しています。「アハブのように主の目の前に悪を行うことに身をゆだねた者はなかった。その妻イゼベルが彼をそそのかしたのである。」（25節　口語訳）。この度、イゼベルと共に企んで人を殺しその持ち物を奪い取りました（1-16節参照）。彼らは公には合法的に見せかけましたが、主はすべてを見抜いていました。しかし、アハブがへりくだり、悔いる心を示し、悔い改めたときには、神は下されたさばきを後伸ばしにして、息子の時代（同じ悪の道を進みました）に実現させると言いました。アハブの悔い改めはどこまで本物で真剣であったでしょうか？神のみが知ることであり、取り扱いました。このことから学ぶのはこれです。主はあわれみ深い神であり、真の悔い改めにはこたえる神であります（最も邪悪なものに対しても）。「主を求めよ、お会いできる間に。呼び求めよ、近くにおられるうちに。悪しき者は自分の道を、不法者は自分のはかりごとを捨て去れ。主に帰れ。そうすれば、主はあわれんでくださる。私たちの神に帰れ。豊かに赦してくださるから」（イザヤ55:6-7 JSS2017；2歴代誌 7:14も参照）。

1Ki 21:27-29 NLT  But when Ahab heard this message, he tore his clothing, dressed in burlap, and fasted. He even slept in burlap and went about in deep mourning.  28 Then another message from the LORD came to Elijah:  29 “Do you see how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has done this, I will not do what I promised during his lifetime. It will happen to his sons; I will destroy his dynasty.”

Observation

No matter who it is and what he has done, when there is repentance God responds with forgiveness, but he is also a wholly righteous and just God.  Here is the Bible’s evaluation of Ahab: “No one else so completely sold himself to what was evil in the LORD’s sight as Ahab did under the influence of his wife Jezebel.” (v.25)  Now he and Jezebel have killed a man and taken his property (see v.1-16).  Even though they tried to make it look legitimate, God sees everything and even the motives of the heart.  But when Ahab exhibits a contrite and repentant heart, God says that he would only bring the judgment on the house of Ahab in the days of his son (who continued to walk in all the same wickedness.) How deep and sincere was Ahab’s repentance?  Only God knows and he deals with him accordingly.  What we do know is that God is a merciful and forgiving God when we turn to him in true and total repentance. Here is God’s call to all (even the wicked): “Seek the LORD while you can find Him. Call on Him now while He is near. 7 Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong. Let them turn to the LORD that He may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for He will forgive generously.” (Isa 55:6-7; see also 1Chro 7:14)
