Scripture
2Pe 2:9 (NLT)Â So you see, the Lord knows how to rescue godly people from their trials, even while keeping the wicked under punishment until the day of final judgment.
Observation
Some think that if we follow Jesus and walk upright, we should not have any trials or difficulties in life. Nothing in Scripture supports this and it is a very self-centered way of seeing life and the expectation we should have for it. Here is what David said, “The eyes of the LORD watch over those who do right; His ears are open to their cries for help. 16 But the LORD turns His face against those who do evil; He will erase their memory from the earth. 17 The LORD hears His people when they call to Him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. 18 The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those whose spirits are crushed. 19 The righteous person faces many troubles, but the LORD comes to the rescue each time.†(Psa 34:15-19 NLT) This does not promise no trials or troubles but rather that the Lord will deliver the righteous when they face many troubles. It promises that “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted†(those who feel broken in the midst of troubles.) Peter is also referring to the ultimate judgment of evil and unrighteousness. Nowhere in Scripture is there an example of God removing his people from the judgment but rather protecting in it and leading them through it (see the plagues and judgements on Egypt in the Exodus; the Babylonian Exile etc.) The judgments God will bring on the earth are to judge the wicked, but also he provides salvation and deliverance for his people in the midst of the judgment. This is also what Peter is telling us by giving two other examples, Noah and the Flood, and Lot in the midst of judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah (see v. 5-8). There is no promise of God removing his people from the tribulation that he allows for judgment, but rather He will deliver them in the midst of the tribulation. This is also true for the trials and troubles we experience personally. “The Lord knows how to rescue godly people from their trials.†(see also 1Cor 10:13)
