Scripture
Oba 1:3-4, 12 NLT You have been deceived by your own pride because you live in a rock fortress and make your home high in the mountains. ‘Who can ever reach us way up here?’ you ask boastfully. 4 But even if you soar as high as eagles and build your nest among the stars, I will bring you crashing down,” says the LORD. 12 “You should not have gloated when they exiled your relatives to distant lands. You should not have rejoiced when the people of Judah suffered such misfortune. You should not have spoken arrogantly in that terrible time of trouble.â€
Observation
Because Esau was “a descendant of Abraham†the Lord gave him many opportunities to repent and return to the Lord. But two thing Esau and his descendants (Edom) refused to turn loose of, were pride and unforgiveness. His brother Jacob had seriously wronged him, but had asked for his forgiveness (see Gen 32). It seems that there was a measure of reconciliation but Esau’s and Edom’s actions through the years and generations show that Esau refused to let go of his bitterness and always tried to establish himself as the dominant one. Pride and unforgiveness ultimately destroyed Edom and now all that is left is archaeological sites such as Petra and historical records of their ancient civilization. Scripture repeatedly warns of the dangers and damage of pride (see Pro 16:18; Isa 14:13-15; 1John 2:16 etc.) “Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you.†(1Pet 5:5-6 ESV) The other thing is unforgiveness. No matter what has been done to us, we cannot hang onto it and refuse to forgive. Unforgiveness does not hurt the offender but rather, it destroys the one who refuses to forgive. Forgiveness is the only way we have been reconciled with the Father, and we are told, “forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.†(Eph 4:32 ESV) We are also warned, “See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled.†(Heb 12:15 ESV)
