２列王記 2:9,13-14（新改訳JSS）　渡り終えると、エリヤはエリシャに言った。「あなたのために何をしようか。私があなたのところから取り去られる前に求めなさい。」するとエリシャは、「では、あなたの霊のうちから、二倍の分を私のものにしてください」と言った。13それから、彼はエリヤの身から落ちた外套を拾い上げ、引き返してヨルダン川の岸辺に立った。14彼は、エリヤの身から落ちた外套を取って水を打ち、「エリヤの神、主はどこにおられるのですか」と言った。エリシャが水を打つと、水が両側に分かれ、彼はそこを渡った。

2Ki 2:9,13-14 ESV  When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.” 13  And he took up the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. 14 Then he took the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the water, saying, “Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?” And when he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha went over.

Observation

Elijah knows it is his time to be taken, Elisha also knows that the time is coming.  Elijah tests how serious Elisha is about following him.  This started when Elijah first threw his mantle on Elisha and said, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?” (see 1Kings 19:19-20).  But Elisha perseveres and refuses to stop following Elijah, even though Elijah urges him repeatedly.  The mantle was representative of Elijah’s anointing and ministry.  In response to Elijah’s offer, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you”, Elisha asks, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.”  When the whirlwind takes Elijah up into heaven, his mantle falls to the ground.  Elisha rips his own cloak in two and then takes up Elijah’s mantle.  Returning to the Jordan, Elisha cries out, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” and repeated what Elijah had done, striking the water with the mantle.  The water of the Jordan parted and he crossed over. This is the beginning of Elisha’s double portion ministry. Jesus promised us the Holy Spirit as our Helper and after he said we would do the same works he did and even greater. (see John 14:12-14, 16,26).
