2Ki 4:2-3 NIV84Â Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a little oil.” 3 Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few.
Observation
A widow of one of the company of prophets comes to Elisha with a seemingly impossible situation. Her husband has died leaving a huge debt. As the dictates of the time, the creditor could come and take whatever was needed to satisfy the debt, including the children (to be taken as slaves.) This would of course break the mother’s heart. Elisha asks her, “What do you have in your house?†To which she replied, “Nothing†but she added, “…except a little oil.†Elisha then instructed her, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few.†Then she was to go inside her house, shut the door and pour oil into all the jars until they were full. She did so until there were no more jars to fill. Then the oil stopped. Amazing miracle of God’s supply. God promises, “You can be sure that God will take care of everything you need, his generosity exceeding even yours in the glory that pours from Jesus.†(Phil 4:19 MSG)   First, God asks for, not what we do not have, but what we do have, even if it is only a little. That is where He can start to work, when we give him what we have. Then she was to go to her neighbors and ask for empty jars. This again was something she and her boys had to do. Whether we understand or not, we must learn to obey and do what the Lord asks us to do. Finally, she was to go into her house, shut the door and fill the jars. Sometimes the Lord works publicly but other times he works quietly, in our own house, privately. The important thing is to learn to hear and obey. When we have a need Jesus taught us, “”Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.â€Â (Matt 7:7-8 NIV84) But he also instructs us, “But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.†(Matt 6:6 NLT)
How does this apply to you?
