Scripture

2Ki 4:8-10 NLT  One day Elisha went to the town of Shunem. A wealthy woman lived there, and she urged him to come to her home for a meal. After that, whenever he passed that way, he would stop there for something to eat. 9 She said to her husband, “I am sure this man who stops in from time to time is a holy man of God. 10 Let’s build a small room for him on the roof and furnish it with a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp. Then he will have a place to stay whenever he comes by.”

Observation

As Elisha traveled around, he encountered opposition and adversity, but there were also those who recognized him as a prophet or a man of God and honored him.  One such person was the Shunammite woman.  When she invited Elisha to come to her house for a meal, it must have been quite something because from then on whenever he was in the area (northern Israel) he would stop by for a meal.  The woman and her husband had a small room made and furnished for him to stay at and rest when he came by.  Hospitality is highly praised and encouraged throughout scripture but especially in the NT.  This is one way of showing and expressing the Love of Christ.  Paul tells us the marks of a genuine Christian, which include hospitality. “Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. 10 Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. 11 Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. 12 Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. 13 When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality. (Rom 12:9-13 NLT)  Hebrews tells us, “Keep on loving each other as brothers and sisters. 2 Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!   (Heb 13:1-2 NLT)  The Shunammite woman did not do this with any ulterior motive or to gain anything, quite the opposite.  When asked how she could be repaid, she replied that she was well cared for and needed nothing.  But Elisha found out one need she did have and by a miracle provided for her need (see v.14-17).
How does this apply to you?
