Scripture
2Ki 4:25,27,28,30 NLTÂ As she approached the man of God at Mount Carmel, Elisha saw her in the distance. He said to Gehazi, “Look, the woman from Shunem is coming. 27 But when she came to the man of God at the mountain, she fell to the ground before him and caught hold of his feet. Gehazi began to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone. She is deeply troubled, but the LORD has not told me what it is.” 28 Then she said, “Did I ask you for a son, my lord? And didn’t I say, ‘Don’t deceive me and get my hopes up’?” 30 But the boy’s mother said, “As surely as the LORD lives and you yourself live, I won’t go home unless you go with me.” So Elisha returned with her.
Observation
This whole story is about a miracle in progress and perseverance to receive it. It does not happen instantaneously but rather unfolds one step at a time. When the Shunammite woman’s son died, whom God had miraculously given to her through the word of Elisha, she begins her process to receive her miracle. She asks her husband for a donkey and servant to take her to the prophet Elisha (v. 22-24). She does not tell anyone her mission or purpose, not even her husband or even Gehazi whom Elisha sent to find out what was the matter (see v.25-26). She bares her heart and situation to Elisha and refuses to leave him until he comes back with her to where the dead son is laying. Even Elisha had to contend for this miracle. He went in to pray for the boy, stretched himself out on his dead body twice; continued to pray until life came back into the boy (see v. 34-35). There are times when we must contend for answers to prayer and for miracles. But ultimately it is in God’s timing and plan. Hebrews tells us, “Women received back their dead, raised to life again. Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a better resurrection.†(Heb 11:35 NLT) Whether there was a resurrection or not Hebrews tells us, “These were ALL commended for their faith.†(Heb 11:39 NLT). The important thing is to keep our eyes on Jesus and our faith and trust in him, not necessarily what we want (see Heb 12:1-2). Patient perseverance is what we need to receive the promises (see Heb 10:35-39.) “But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him.†(Heb 10:38 NLT).
