Scripture
2Ki 5:13-14 NIV84 Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” 14 So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.

Observation
The story of Naaman is a beautiful story of God’s grace, forgiveness and cleansing. Naaman was an army commander of Aram, sworn enemy of Israel. But he is defiled by leprosy, a type of sin in Scripture. (see Isa 1:6; Jer 30:12). Naaman is told about a prophet of God in Israel who performs miracles and might be able to heal him. With letters of introduction (which actually complicate the situation), Naaman goes to Elisha the prophet. He takes much gold and silver and many gifts to pay for his healing. But this is not how God works. Also, he expects Elisha to respect his position and work a certain way. But Elisha sends Naaman a message with a simple instruction, “Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.†He became very angry and almost missed his miracle because of pride. But his servants calmed him down and said, “If the prophet told you to do some great thing, you would do it, isn’t that right? But he said, ‘Wash, and you will be pure and clean.'” In the same way, we are diseased by sin, but think that we can buy or earn our forgiveness. Paul tells us, “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24 Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when He freed us from the penalty for our sins.†(Rom 3:23-24 NLT). “He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.†(Titus 3:5 NLT) Just like Naaman and his simple faith and obedience, we can be cleansed and made whole from our sin, by simply believing and trusting in the cleansing power of the blood of Jesus. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—†(Eph 2:8 NIV84)

How does this apply to you?
