２列王記 8:18-19（新改訳JSS2017）　彼はアハブの家の者がしたように、イスラエルの王たちの道に歩んだ。アハブの娘が彼の妻だったからである。彼は主の目に悪であることを行った。しかし、主はそのしもべダビデに免じて、ユダを滅ぼすことを望まれなかった。主はダビデとその子孫に常にともしびを与えると彼に約束されたからである。

コメント

主なる神はご自分の約束と契約に対して、真実であり忠実です。私たち神の子でありながら自分の選択によって悪い種をまくこともあり、その結果、悪しき収穫も刈り取ることもありますが、それでも、神は私たちのためにその契約を守ってくださる。ヨシャパテ王はユダとイスラエルの間の関係を回復しようと心がけました。ユダとイスラエルはレハブアム王（ソロモンの子）と北王国の最初の王ヤロブアムの時代に分裂し、争いが絶えませんでした。ヨシャパテ王はたくさん良いことをし、良い王とみなされていますが、自分の息子のために、アハブとエゼベルの娘アタルヤを嫁として迎えました。政治的に、国事的には両国の間に和解をもたらす賢いことと思われたかもしれません。しかし、その結果は非常に悲惨であり、最終的にあと少しで、ダビデの王朝が滅びる寸前まで行きました（２列王記 8:26-27; 11:1-3など参照）。その悪い選択にもかかわらず、神は背後で忠実に働かれました。私たちの選択のゆえにその結果をも刈り取ります。でも、世の知恵が魅力あるように見えても、最初から主を信頼して、神の道に歩む方がよいのです。箴言は警告しています。「人にはまっすぐに見えるが、その終わりが死となる道がある」（箴言 14:12 JSS2017）。この世と妥協したり、歩調を合わせたりすると、私たちも、家族も汚染されます。「世を愛することは神に敵対することだと分からないのですか。世の友となりたいと思う者はだれでも、自分を神の敵としているのです」（ヤコブ4:4; ２コリント6:14 も参照）。イエスは罪人と取税人の友であったとありますが、彼らの悪しき道には歩みませんでした。また、彼らの生き様と妥協したり、歩調を合わせたりはしませんでした。彼らを愛し、親切に友として寄り添いました。それは彼らに神の道、真理の道を示すためでした。

2Ki 8:18-19 ESV   And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for the daughter of Ahab was his wife. And he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. 19 Yet the LORD was not willing to destroy Judah, for the sake of David his servant, since he promised to give a lamp to him and to his sons forever.

Observation

The Lord God is always faithful to his covenant even when we are not.  Our choices can sow seeds that we and our children will reap but God still keeps covenant.  Jehoshaphat tries to improve relations between Judah and Israel which split under King Rehoboam, son of Solomon and King Jeroboam, first king of northern kingdom of Israel. Jehoshaphat did many good things and was even considered a good king.  Yet he takes a daughter of Ahab and Jezabel named Athalia for his son Jehoram.  It was obviously a political marriage, but it caused much harm and disaster to Judah and almost wiped out David’s dynasty (see 2Kings 8:26-27; 11:1-3).  God is faithful in spite of our mistakes and wrong decisions.  But we will reap the consequences.  Better to trust the Lord and walk in his ways even when it seems worldly wisdom might be better.  Proverbs warns us, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” (Prov 14:12 ESV)  Compromise and trying to get along with evil and worldly ways will always corrupt us and our families. “You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” (Jam 4:4; see 2Cor 6:14 etc.) Jesus was a friend of sinners but he never walked in their ways nor compromised the God’s ways or truth.
