Scripture
2Ki 12:19-20 NIV84 As for the other events of the reign of Joash, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 20 His officials conspired against him and assassinated him at Beth Millo, on the road down to Silla.
Observation
Joash started out well. Although he was only 7 years old when he ascended the throne, Jehoiada the High Priest, taught and advised him in the ways of the Lord. Scripture says, “Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the years Jehoiada the priest instructed him.†(v.2 NIV84) By comparing the record of Joash’s reign in 2Chro 24, we can see what happened after Jehoiada died. Some of the leaders of Judah who became his advisors now turned his heart away from the Lord and the Temple of the Lord (see 2Chro 24:18-18). Joash turned to idolatry. God sent many prophets to warn and turn him back to the Lord (see 2Chro 24:19). Finally, the son of Jehoiada, Zechariah, by the Spirit of the Lord prophesied and warned Joash and the people of Judah to return to the Lord. But Joash has Zechariah murdered right in the temple of the Lord (see 2Chro 24:21-22). Even Jesus refers to this, Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.†(Matt 23:34-35 NIV84). Paul warns us: “You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth? That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you.†(Gal 5:7-8 NIV84). In the end, Joash is assassinated by his own officials.   It is important to start well, to keep going well, but most important to end well. (see Phil 1:6)
