Scripture
2Ki 13:4-5 NLT Then Jehoahaz prayed for the LORD’s help, and the LORD heard his prayer, for He could see how severely the king of Aram was oppressing Israel. 5 So the LORD provided someone to rescue the Israelites from the tyranny of the Arameans. Then Israel lived in safety again as they had in former days.
Observation
Jehoahaz, Jehu’s son succeeds him as king of Israel. But neither he nor Israel turn from their sin and idolatry of the Golden Calves (which represent the false and imitation worship of Yahweh, the God of Israel and the one true God.) (see v.2) Because of their continued walking in sin, God turned them over to their enemy King Hazael of Aram (Syria), who severely oppressed them and reduced their army to a very small number (see v.7). But in their trouble, Jehoahaz prayed for the Lord’s help and He heard them (v.4-5). God is so gracious and merciful. And yet, once everything is back to the way it was before, they turned and continued in their former sins and wickedness. Even though God can and does respond to our prayers wherever we are and whatever we have done, unless we truly repent (turn from evil and wicked ways, and walk in God’s ways), we will only bring on ourselves the fruit of our ways, destruction and oppression. “Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong. Let them turn to the LORD that He may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for He will forgive generously.†(Isa 55:7 NLT) This is God’s heart. He wants to help and deliver us. But He must judge sin, if we refuse to repent. How does this apply to you?
