Scripture

2Ki 13:14  Now Elisha was suffering from the illness from which he died. Jehoash king of Israel went down to see him and wept over him. “My father! My father!” he cried. “The chariots and horsemen of Israel!”

Observation

Elisha is at the end of his life and has become sick.  It elaborates here that this was the illness from which he died (It is appointed unto man once to die; Heb 9:27).  Elisha was a mighty prophet of the Lord with double anointing compared to Elijah.  Remember, when it was Elijah’s time, the Lord took him into heaven by chariots and horsemen of fire (see 2Kings 2). But Elisha dies of an illness.  Obviously, King Jehoash had heard of Elijah’s chariots and horsemen.  Also when the chariots and horsemen of Aram had come to capture or kill Elisha, again the chariots and horsemen of fire appeared and delivered not only Elisha but all Israel (see 2Kings 6:17).  Elisha and his prophetic, miraculous ministry had brought deliverance to Israel time and again.  Now he is about to die.  King Jehoash of Israel was fearful what would happen without Elisha.  He addresses Elisha, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel†He only saw Elisha as their strength and defense against their enemies (like chariots and horsemen).  He fails to recognize it is the God of Elisha that is their protection and the one in whom they should put their trust.  No matter how powerful or amazing ministry a man may have, our trust must not be in man but in God.  “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.†(Psa 20:7 NIV84; see also Psa 118:8-9).  Elisha gives Jehoash a prophetic sign of the victory God wants to give Israel.  But even here Jehoash is only half-hearted (see v. 18-19) “This is what the LORD says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD.†(Jer 17:5 NIV84).  “O house of Israel, trust in the LORD— he is their help and shield. 11 You who fear him, trust in the LORD— he is their help and shield.†(Psa 115:9,11 NIV84) “For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. 12 O LORD Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in you.†(Psa 84:11-12 NIV84)
