Scripture
2Ki 15:5Â The LORD afflicted the king with leprosy until the day he died, and he lived in a separate house. Jotham the king’s son had charge of the palace and governed the people of the land.
Observation
Azariah is also known as Uzziah. Both names are used in Scripture (compare 2Chro 26:1; see also v.13,32 etc.). There is a very specific reason Azariah (Uzziah) was struck with leprosy (see 2Chro 26:16-20). Azariah started well. It says, “He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD.†(v.3). He did much good for Judah. “But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God, and entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense.†(2Chro 26:16 NIV84; this was only for the Levite priest). As a result he was not only excluded from the Temple of the Lord, but was forced to live in isolation for the remainder of his life. We are not told if Azariah (Uzziah) repented, but he lived with the consequence of his sin. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.†(Rom 6:23 NIV84). We also have confidence that when we repent and turn to the Lord, He does forgive our sins. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.†(1John 1:9 NIV84). This has to do with our right standing before God. But there are consequences of sin which we must live with.
