Scripture

2Ki 16:2 ESV Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD his God, as his father David had done,

Observation

There have been several consecutive kings of Judah which for the most part have done what is right in the eyes of the Lord, turned their hearts to seek the Lord and walked in his ways: Jehoash; Amaziah; Azariah (Uzziah); Jotham.  But now another Jotham’s son Ahaz becomes king and decides to go a different way.  He does not walk in the ways of King David in doing what is right in the eyes of the Lord.  Rather he chooses to walk in the ways of the Kings of Israel, but he goes even further, he offers his son as a sacrifice by fire and other sacrifices on every pagan altar on the hills and under every green tree.  James describes it this way, “But every person is tempted when he is drawn away, enticed and baited by his own evil desire (lust, passions). Then the evil desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is fully matured, brings forth death. Do not be misled, my beloved brethren.†(Jam 1:14-16 AMP).  This is true individually and also nationally.  That is why we are admonished to pray especially for our leaders.  “FIRST OF all, then, I admonish and urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be offered on behalf of all men, 2 For kings and all who are in positions of authority or high responsibility, that [outwardly] we may pass a quiet and undisturbed life [and inwardly] a peaceable one in all godliness and reverence and seriousness in every way.†(1Tim 2:1-2 AMP).

How does this apply to you?
