Scripture
2Ki 18:19 NLT Then the Assyrian king’s chief of staff told them to give this message to Hezekiah: “This is what the great king of Assyria says: What are you trusting in that makes you so confident?
Observation
Although Hezekiah started off well trusting in the Lord, remaining faithful to the Lord in everything and carefully obeying the commands of the Lord (see v.5,6 etc.), yet Assyria, their enemy and the enemy of the Lord has attacked the land of Judah and conquered many of their cities. Hezekiah has a choice, continue to trust in the Lord and remain faithful or to trust in the wisdom and power of man. On the one hand Hezekiah is proclaiming his trust in the Lord, but on the other hand he is compromising and trying to appease the enemy, he even takes gold from the Temple of the Lord to try to placate the King of Assyria. It does not work; they come for more and to completely humiliate and destroy the land of Judah (see v.17). Then the Assyrians mock and challenge Hezekiah and his God. “What are you trusting in that makes you so confident?â€Â At this point Hezekiah is still trusting in his own strength and wisdom but trying to both trust in the Lord and also compromising and placating the enemy. It does not work! The enemy had pulled his bluff and challenged Hezekiah.  But he has forgotten the word of the Lord, “Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he answers him from his holy heaven with the saving power of his right hand. 7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. 8 They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm. 9 O LORD, save the king! Answer us when we call!†(Psa 20:6-9 NIV84). What is Hezekiah going to do? How should he respond now?
How does this apply to you?
