２列王記 19:14-16 (新改訳JSS2017)　ヘゼキヤは、死者の手からその手紙を受け取って読み、主の宮に上って行き、それを主の前に広げた。ヘゼキヤは主の前で祈った。「ケルビムの上に座しておられるイスラエルの神、主よ、ただ、あなただけが、地のすべての王国の神です。あなたが天と地を造られました。主よ。御耳を傾けて聞いてください。主よ。御目を開いてごらんください。

コメント

アッシリア大王とその部下たちはヘゼキヤ王とエルサレムの住民たちを挑発し、あざけりました。さらに、主なる神を地方の神々としてあざけり、けなしました（18:20-22,29-30,33-35参照）。ヘゼキヤ王の反応は祈るために主の神殿へ行き、アッシリア大王の挑発の手紙を主の前に広げました。ヘゼキヤ王の目的と同期はただ自分たちの救いと助けだけではなく、主なる神の偉大な御名の侮辱を晴らすためでした。「私たちの神、主よ。どうか今、私たちを彼の手から救ってください。そうすれば、地のすべての王国は、主よ、あなただけが神であることを知るでしょう」（19節 JSS2017）。主は答えて、アッシリア大王に言いました。「おまえはだれをそしり、だれをののしったのか。だれに向かって声をあげ、高慢な目を上げたのか。イスラエルの聖なる者に対してだ。おまえは使者たちを通して、主をそしって言った」（22-23節 JSS2017）。そして主がアッシリア大王と軍隊に対して宣言されました。「おまえが座るのも、出て行くのも、おまえが入るのも、わたしはよく知っている。わたしに向かっていきり立つのも。おまえがわたしに向かっていきり立ち、おまえの安逸がわたしの耳に届いたので、わたしはおまえの鼻に鉤輪を、口にくつわをはめ、おまえを、もと来た道に引き戻す」（27-28節 JSS2017）。私たちの心を主に向け、主なる神により頼むとき、主は私たちを助け、救い出すだけではなく、全ての人々の間で、主なる神の偉大な御名が崇められるようになされます。主こそ、全ての国々の上に立つ主権者なる神であることを知るようになる。

2Ki 19:14-15 NLT  After Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it, he went up to the LORD’s Temple and spread it out before the LORD. 15 And Hezekiah prayed this prayer before the LORD: “O LORD, God of Israel, You are enthroned between the mighty cherubim! You alone are God of all the kingdoms of the earth. You alone created the heavens and the earth.

Observation

Sennacherib and the Assyrian commanders had not only threated and mocked Hezekiah and the Jews in Jerusalem, but they also directly mocked and ridiculed the God of Israel, making the Lord like some local tribal god. (see 18:20-22, 29-30, 33-35).  Hezekiah’s response was to go pray at the temple.  He took the letter from Sennacherib and “spread it out before the Lord.”  Hezekiah’s purpose and motivation was not just personal security and safety but rather to avenge the honor of the name of the Lord among the nations. “Now, O LORD our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all kingdoms on earth may know that you alone, O LORD, are God.” (v.19 NLT).  The Lord’s response was, “Who is it you have insulted and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel! By your messengers you have heaped insults on the Lord.” (v.22-23 NIV84). Then the Lord declares judgment on Sennacherib and the Assyrians, “But I know where you stay and when you come and go and how you rage against me. Because you rage against me and your insolence has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will make you return by the way you came.” (v.27-28 NIV84). When we turn to the Lord and put our trust in Him, He will not only deliver us but will also defend the honor of his name among the nations.  Then all the nations will know that the Lord is the God of all the nations.
